Andrew Low and the Sign of the Buck: Trade,Triumph, Tragedy at the House of Low by Jennifer Guthrie Ryan and Hugh Stiles Golson

This book, and many more available!

This extensive biography spans two centuries of the intertwined families of the House of Low and the extended families of the Clays, Stiles, and Mackays. Commencing with the Jacobite rebellions for the throne of feudal Scotland, coinciding with the settling of Colonial Georgia in the 1700′s, it takes the reader on a fascinating voyage through ancestral connections to America’s War of Independence and to Edwardian England. Beginning with the migration of Andrew Low, Sr., to Savannah, Georgia, in 1800, the family is involved in murder and mayhem in the burning of French privateers during the War of 1812, the investment in the S.S. Savannah, the rise in prominence of the family’s antebellum cotton factorage business, the Civil War, and the founding of the the Girl Scouts of America by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912. The Lows entertained splendidly, and their guests included General Robert E. Lee and William Makepeace Thackeray.
